We use 100 grinders a year. We have found after testing every brand that Makita makes the best grinders. You can't go wrong with these.

Variable speed grinder

Pros: Control is the key.
Cons: Longer body, a little heavier

We use the Makita 9564CV as a sculpting tool to carve our animal drums (outdoor musical instruments for olaygrounds). The variable speed control gives us just that, control. Convex and concave surfaces require much less finish sanding when we use this tool. I have 4 other Makita grinders (not variable speed models) that have been worked hard for years and I expect the same durability from this one. We have a little trick to increase the flexibility of our flap disks. We trim about 1/4" off the edge of the backing. This allows the flaps to flex a little more and shape the contours we need. As they say, "Don't try this at home!"
